Tourist Visitor Advisory Riga & Latvia

Alerts Riga Latvia

Watch the street crime. Pickpockets and lookouts with mobile phone communication will spot you at the Stockmann store or using one of the ATM machines located around the city. They will surprise you later on the street.

Avoid the tunnel from Hotel Metropole to the bus station and central market especially at night. There have been some racially motivated attacks in the tunnel and high potential for crime. As an option, cross on the surface street close to McDonalds and the train station.

There have been recent May 2008 reports of visitors being "maced" on the streets at night and robbed. Be sure to travel is small groups and keep reasonably low key and avoid drawing attention to your self. Don't become a magnaet for these bad folks.

Be careful of taxi overcharging. Trips originating at the central bus station, Riga Hotel, LIDO Krasta or street hailed cabs to the airport are especially huge problem. click more information

SCAM - Beware of a common scam mostly in the Old City. Well dressed man approaches speaking good English and says he needs 20 Ls bill to get his car out of parking jail. He has a handful of coins which look like the 2 Lats coin. But they are actually Lithuanian coins with the mark Lutvia on the back. They are close to worthless.
