Relative Search Latvia - Latvian Vital Records National Archives

Looking for information about your relatives originally from Latvia.

It is quite easy but will take some time and patience. Latvian law requires good record keeping and most of the information about birth certificates, church membership, baptismal certificates, marriage and death certificates is recorded.

If you know the city where the people were from, we suggest that you start there first. Contact the museum office in that city and see if they have knowledge  and / or information. You may also visit the local church as many times they have records as well.

Be aware that due to the economic situation, many smaller cities and villages have disconsolated their offices and records in a branch location sometimes some distance away.

Next, start your official search at the main office of the State Archives located on the corner of Slokas iela and Kalnciema iela - on the west side of the river Daugava (Valdemara on east side of river).

There are several remote branch locations which you may need to visit.

You should plan at least four hours for the visit and have Latvian language capability as they will not speak English.

They will open a research case and they will search for the records.

It may take as long as 18 months or just a couple days - it all depends - many factors.

They always more quicker when someone shows up in person with a friendly smile and some flowers and a box of candy.
