Hop on Hop Off Bus Tours Riga Latvia convenient for Cruise Ship Arrivals

There are two companies offering a Hop On Hop Off style bus tours in Riga Latvia.

Both have their main start/stop location located at City Hall Square next to the Occupation Museum and called Ratslaukums or Strelnieku Square in Latvian language.

This is about 15 blocks South of the Riga Passenger Ferry Terminal where the Stockholm Ferry docks as well as most cruise ships. Just walk down the river prominade sidewalk South to the second bridge (Stone Bridge - Ackmens tilts)

The Original HansaBuss Hop on Hop Office bus company (red colored double decker buses)does not accept credit cards.

The Riga Sightseeing Bus Company does claim to accept credit cards and maybe Euros for payment.

Most (99.5%) of place in Riga do not accept Euros or US Dollar currency for payment.

Best to pay in Latvian Ls currency.

There are many bank ATM machines located in street kiosks and you will get the best exchange rate when you use these cash points with your bank ATM or debit card.

The HansaBuss Hop on Hop Off system departure point closest to the Riga Ferry Terminal is from City Hall Square next to the Occupation Museum and called Ratslaukums or Strelnieku Square in Latvian language.

The Riga Sightseeing company (yellow busses) offers several routes and does have a stop at the Riga Ferry terminal area.

Take tram 7 or 9 from the opera house (down the hill toward the cinema) and exit at the 10th (tenth) stop called Atputas centrs "Lido" - the stop just before is: Lubanas iela. Purchase tickets from the driver first car - price 0.70 Ls per trip per person (about US$1.50).

Return to city center by tram 7 or 9 and exit city center at the Opera house or proceed two stops further and exit Ausekļa iela which is close to the Riga Passenger port (1 block to river from tram stop)

Museum “Jews in Latvia”
Come join “TheCeļotājs” journey through time, as we visit the Museum “Jews in Latvia” located at Skolas iela Riga LV-1322 Latvia. The museum hours are Sunday through Thursday fron 12:00hrs to 17:00hrs. It is located in the second floor of the Jewish Community Building. As we enter the museum on the second floor, we will enter the first room of exhibits. Starting from left and going right, we will pictures and documents from Jews entering Latvia during the 16th thru 18th centuries. Former Riga Jewish Ghetto Area
Come join “TheCeļotājs” journey through time, as we journey back to the year 1941 and to the area where the former Riga Jewish Ghetto was located. Even though the gates, barbwire fences, watch towers and guards are long gone, the buildings, streets and the ghosts of its former occupants still remain. Were over 30,000 men women children and families were crammed into an areas no larger then a shoe box were living quarters were assigned not by rooms but by mirror meters. Where living conditions became inhuman and food became scarce. Where some people had barely enough to eat maybe a piece of bread if they were that lucky to even have that!

Rumbula Forest "Site of the Jewish Mass Killings"
Come join “TheCeļotājs” journey through time, as we journey back to November 30 and December 8, 1941 and the Rumbula Forest which is one of the biggest sites of mass executions of Jews in Europe. In November, 1941 the Nazi Administration decided to destroy all the Jews imprisoned in the Riga Ghetto. 25,000 people, including about one thousand Jews deported from Germany, were shot in two waves on November 30 and December 8, 1941. Several hundred Jews from the “Kaizerwald” concentration camp, who were used for exhuming and burning bodies, were also executed here in 1944. Near the road, at the entrance to Rumbula Forest the memorial a metal construction that symbolizes the horror of the catastrophe. This is the path on which thousands of Jews were driven to their deaths.

Jaunie ebrelu kapi "New Jewish Cemetery"
Come join “TheCeļotājs” journey to the Jaunie ebrelu kapi “New Jewish Cemetery" the only official Jewish Cemetery in Riga Latvia. It replaced the former Old Jewish Cemetery located south of the Center City area. When the Soviets reoccupied Riga following World War II they desecrated the Old Jewish Cemetery and moved all the graves to the New Jewish Cemetery and turned it into a park. There is a monument at the entrance to what is now a park. Located in the New Jewish Cemetery there is a World War II German monument to the German soldiers that were buried there.


Biķernieku Forest "Site of the Jewish Mass Killings"
Come join “TheCeļotājs” journey through time, as we journey back to the Biķernieku Forest where the largest site of mass killing and burial of victims of Nazi terror in Latvia is located. From 1941 till 1944, 35,000 people, including Latvian and Western European Jews, Soviet war prisoners, and the Nazis’ political adversaries, were killed here. In 1943, Riga Ghetto prisoners who were not transferred to the “Kaizerwald” concentration camp were killed here, followed in the autumn of 1944 by those “Kaizerwald” prisoners no longer able to work.

The Transit Camp Kurtenhof “Salaspils Concentration Camp” Memorial
Come join “TheCeļotājs” journey through time, as we journey back to the year 1941 and the Transit Camp Kurtenhof “Salaspils Concentration Camp”. Even though the gates, barbwire fences, guards, guard towers, buildings and its former occupants are long gone, all that now remains are the building’s foundation stones, gallows foundation stones, its ghosts and the spirits of its former occupants still remain. As you enter and walk around the grounds of the former Transit Camp Kurtenhof “Salaspils Concentration Camp” all one has to do is close your eyes and open your ears and mind you will hear the screams and sufferings of the former occupants who were tortured executed for minor infractions of the camp rules forced to do force labor and hard labor it was working in camp shops, peat marshes and other hard labor. Even the children who occupied the camp were experimented on in the most inhuman ways.

Spring has sprung in Riga Latvia

As the sun breaks the clouds, the temperature has now managed to stay above freezing for 24 hours or so and the ice on the Daugava River is starting to disappear. It is daylight at 07:00 Am and the feeling in the air is that Winter is finally over for 2009 and spring has arrived. For me personally, it is a great feeling and from the increased numbers of people on the streets it must be welcome news for them as well. Tourists are arriving and the Hop On Hop Off tour buses are all shined up. Maybe this will be the start of some good economic news for a change in Latvia. Riga Latvia's capital city is over 800 years old and is the Home of The First Christmas Tree in the year 1510.

Where is the Riga Airport Bus Stop in City center?

There is one Riga City bus (Number 22) plus one Shuttle Bus going from Riga City Center to the Riga International Airport RIX.

Auto bus Number 22 stops two places in Riga city center before crossing the Daugava River on its way to the airport. Last stop Hotel Avalon - click map.

There is NO airport bus stop on the river side of Old City.

1. South side of Train station on Gogola Street directly across from the underground tunnel to Central Market

2. On 13 January Street (click map) heading towards the Daugava river almost opposite from new Hotel Avalon.

Where to get off the bus coming from the airport?

.

Auto bus 22 stops immediately after crossing the Daugava River. This is convenient to Old Riga hotels, etc.

The next Riga City Center bus stop is in front of Stockmann Department stores (click map) aross from the canal and close to Hotel Metropole. On the bus the announcement is: next stop Stockmanns Centers.

After Stockmanns, the number 22 bus turns right on Gogola Street goes under the train bridge and stops in front of the Central market. This is the last city center stop.
