Movie - Riga Story tells the 810-year history of Latvian capital
“Riga Story” tells the 810-year history of Latvian capital

Eight centuries in 30 minutes – the short yet memorable documentary film "Riga Story", screened at cinema "Splendid Palace" every day, offers guests of the city an excellent opportunity to learn more about the 810-year history of Riga, informs liveriga.com.
Documentary "Riga Story" (Rīgas stāsts) offers a fascinating insight into the 800-year history Riga and is a stimulus for further exploration of the city and its cultural and historic monuments.
The 30-minute-long documentary was shot by the acclaimed Vides filmu studija in cooperation with SIA Rīgas nami.
The creators of the film: screenwriter Pēteris Krilovs, director Dainis Kļava, camera operator Valdis Celmiņš, designerEdmunds Jansons, composer Kārlis Auzāns, history consultant Valdis Klišāns, translators Dzintra Džonsa and Kārlis Streips (English version), Darja Kulagina (Russian version), dialogue by Marats Samauskis, voiceover by Graham Jones (English version), Anatolijs Fetčins (Russian version), film crew – Arvīds Celmalis, Ernests Kļaviņš, colour correction by Uģis Olte, HD post production – Krišs Rozins.
The film is screened at the "Splendid Palace" cinema's New Hall (lower ground floor) at Elizabetes iela 61. One ticket costs LVL 5. The tickets can also be bought at Riga Tourism Information Centre at 6 Rātslaukums Square.

Swedish choir visits Riga April 30 2011. -- Femina Female Choir
Femina Choir
Twelve years ago, Birgitta Thalén-Sundin with her colleague Elisabeth
Modén established Femina female choir. It all started as an "experiment" where the criterion for getting
participation were: "You may not think you can sing". About 100 women came together and the work began.
The goal is for everyone to feel at home and to develop as singers.
it is still, the same number of participants and the choir is very active. Femina think
to travel both within and outside the borders of our country. The first trip went to Seattle,
Washington, USA. Since then they have been in Italy, Hungary, France, Czech Republic. On
repertoire is much Swedish music. To meet other choirs were we have
musical language in common is a great joy
Choral Director
Birgitta Thalen Sundin, (1958) is active at Sundsvall Cultural School as a vocal coach.
In addition to singing students, theater, training, lectures and other items included in the position
work with children and youth choirs. The commission includes projects and events of
various kinds. Everything from concerts to traditional events such as the Youth Olympics here in Sundsvall
1997 she was the conductor of the 380-strong choir at the dedication. Seemed
Conductor of the 500 children strong choir at the WHO internship conference in the city.
Awarded the prestigious Kjell Lönnå Fellowship in 2008 for outstanding work
choral singing. News right now is public "wellness lunch choirs" where Birgitta Thalén-Sundin
chosen to lead, along with some of "the city's top choral conductors' as it says in
press.
Piano
Lillemor Bodin-Carlson (1959) is employed at the National Cultural Centre in Örnsköldsvik. There is
her mission as a vocal and piano teacher working with children and young people
musical development. Run, individual students, educational projects, etc.. Over the years
also at the side of his job freelancing as a singer and choir director. Has worked with
prominent Swedish artists, as Roger Pontare, La Gaylia Frazer et al. Responsible to
Youth Choir Malva for vocal elements when Carl XVI Gustaf opened the Bothnia Line in August
2011th Has also represented Sweden at the invitation of Administrative Services Agency in Italy
Lucia Youth Choir. Current right now in an EU project focusing on the exchange.

The third Festival of light “Staro Rīga”, this year, will take place from 18 November to 21 November
Art is always developing and finding fresh forms of expression. Artists seek new ways to address audiences. The city is an optimal space for modern art; in an urban environment, works of art can speak to far more people than they do when displayed in more traditional settings. Contemporary art can reach diverse groups of people and cut across socio-economic boundaries, and it can transform the urban environment as well.
“Staro Rīga” (Beaming Riga) – is a festival of light lasting several days. The exhibits transform the cityscape by applying the latest in lighting and video technology to different objects in various locations. The works of art are buildings, squares, bridges, monuments, and other parts of the urban environment. These can be appreciated both up close and from afar, as part of the cityscape as a whole. These works of art in light are supplemented by performances, musical and theatrical events, and the interactive involvement of the audience.
The long-term concept of the festival is to make Riga glow during the darkest time of the year, creating a festive atmosphere not only for the residents of the city but also for everyone in Latvia and visitors to the country. The organizers hope to make the festival the main event of its type in northern Europe, something no one visiting the country would want to miss.
“Staro Rīga” not only illuminates the darkness of the approaching winter but also creates a celebratory mood in advance of Latvia’s Independence Day on November 18th. The events brighten this dark month and bring some light to people’s emotions, encourage the intertwining of cutting edge technology and art, and attempt to provoke thought about energy conservation and the uses we make of electricity.

“TheCeļotājs” has added a new play list titled: The 1941 Riga Latvia Jewish Story “The Year of Terror.”
“TheCeļotājs” will take you back to time past to the year 1941 and the terror the Jewish people suffered during the summer and autumn of 1941. We will visit the former site of the Great Choral Synagogue that was burned down on 4 July 1941 with some 300 Jews locked inside, which has a monument, dedicated to those who died on this day, located at its former site.

Hop on Hop Off Bus Tours Riga Latvia convenient for Cruise Ship Arrivals
There are two companies offering a Hop On Hop Off style bus tours in Riga Latvia.
.
Both have their main start/stop location located at City Hall Square next to the Occupation Museum and called Ratslaukums or Strelnieku Square in Latvian language.
This is about 15 blocks South of the Riga Passenger Ferry Terminal where the Stockholm Ferry docks as well as most cruise ships. Just walk down the river prominade sidewalk South to the second bridge (Stone Bridge - Ackmens tilts)
The Original HansaBuss Hop on Hop Office bus company (red colored double decker buses)does not accept credit cards.
The Riga Sightseeing Bus Company does claim to accept credit cards and maybe Euros for payment.
Most (99.5%) of place in Riga do not accept Euros or US Dollar currency for payment.
Best to pay in Latvian Ls currency.
There are many bank ATM machines located in street kiosks and you will get the best exchange rate when you use these cash points with your bank ATM or debit card.
The HansaBuss Hop on Hop Off system departure point closest to the Riga Ferry Terminal is from City Hall Square next to the Occupation Museum and called Ratslaukums or Strelnieku Square in Latvian language.
The Riga Sightseeing company (yellow busses) offers several routes and does have a stop at the Riga Ferry terminal area.
Price is the same at 10 Ls (15 Euros) per person.

Take tram 7 or 9 from the opera house (down the hill toward the cinema) and exit at the 10th (tenth) stop called Atputas centrs "Lido" - the stop just before is: Lubanas iela. Purchase tickets from the driver first car - price 0.70 Ls per trip per person (about US$1.50).
Return to city center by tram 7 or 9 and exit city center at the Opera house or proceed two stops further and exit Ausekļa iela which is close to the Riga Passenger port (1 block to river from tram stop)

Senās mūzikas festivāls (Early Music Festival) Riga and Rundale - 7 to 10 July 2010
The annual Early Music Festival will take place in Rundāle and in Riga from the 1st to the 10th of July. It will be a colourful celebration of early music for the whole family! German musical culture will be central to the festival this year. The concert programmes will feature compositions by German baroque masters Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Georg Philipp Telemann as well as music that used to be performed at the Court of Dresden for the King of Prussia; certain individuals and the part of German music culture closely related to the city of Riga will also be represented. ‘Latvijas Koncerti’ in cooperation with ‘Skaisto skatu aģentūra’ offers transportation to Rundāle Palace concerts as well as various excursions of your choice. Museum “Jews in Latvia”
Come join “TheCeļotājs” journey through time, as we visit the Museum “Jews in Latvia” located at Skolas iela Riga LV-1322 Latvia. The museum hours are Sunday through Thursday fron 12:00hrs to 17:00hrs. It is located in the second floor of the Jewish Community Building. As we enter the museum on the second floor, we will enter the first room of exhibits. Starting from left and going right, we will pictures and documents from Jews entering Latvia during the 16th thru 18th centuries. Next is Jews in Latvia in the 19th century then Jews in Latvia at the end of the 19th century. Next is Jewish Enlightenment movement. Next is Society of Jewish education. Next is the Outset 0f the Zionist Movement in Latvia. Next is the “Bund” in Latvia. Still moving to the right is the Jews in Kurzeme. Next is Jews in Riga. Next is Jews in Daugavpils. Former Riga Jewish Ghetto Area
Come join “TheCeļotājs” journey through time, as we journey back to the year 1941 and to the area where the former Riga Jewish Ghetto was located. Even though the gates, barbwire fences, watch towers and guards are long gone, the buildings, streets and the ghosts of its former occupants still remain. Were over 30,000 men women children and families were crammed into an areas no larger then a shoe box were living quarters were assigned not by rooms but by mirror meters. Where living conditions became inhuman and food became scarce. Where some people had barely enough to eat maybe a piece of bread if they were that lucky to even have that!
Rumbula Forest "Site of the Jewish Mass Killings"
Come join “TheCeļotājs” journey through time, as we journey back to November 30 and December 8, 1941 and the Rumbula Forest which is one of the biggest sites of mass executions of Jews in Europe. In November, 1941 the Nazi Administration decided to destroy all the Jews imprisoned in the Riga Ghetto. 25,000 people, including about one thousand Jews deported from Germany, were shot in two waves on November 30 and December 8, 1941. Several hundred Jews from the “Kaizerwald” concentration camp, who were used for exhuming and burning bodies, were also executed here in 1944. Near the road, at the entrance to Rumbula Forest the memorial a metal construction that symbolizes the horror of the catastrophe. This is the path on which thousands of Jews were driven to their deaths.
Jaunie ebrelu kapi "New Jewish Cemetery"
Come join “TheCeļotājs” journey to the Jaunie ebrelu kapi “New Jewish Cemetery" the only official Jewish Cemetery in Riga Latvia. It replaced the former Old Jewish Cemetery located south of the Center City area. When the Soviets reoccupied Riga following World War II they desecrated the Old Jewish Cemetery and moved all the graves to the New Jewish Cemetery and turned it into a park. There is a monument at the entrance to what is now a park. Located in the New Jewish Cemetery there is a World War II German monument to the German soldiers that were buried there.
Biķernieku Forest "Site of the Jewish Mass Killings"
Come join “TheCeļotājs” journey through time, as we journey back to the Biķernieku Forest where the largest site of mass killing and burial of victims of Nazi terror in Latvia is located. From 1941 till 1944, 35,000 people, including Latvian and Western European Jews, Soviet war prisoners, and the Nazis’ political adversaries, were killed here. In 1943, Riga Ghetto prisoners who were not transferred to the “Kaizerwald” concentration camp were killed here, followed in the autumn of 1944 by those “Kaizerwald” prisoners no longer able to work.
The Transit Camp Kurtenhof “Salaspils Concentration Camp” Memorial
Come join “TheCeļotājs” journey through time, as we journey back to the year 1941 and the Transit Camp Kurtenhof “Salaspils Concentration Camp”. Even though the gates, barbwire fences, guards, guard towers, buildings and its former occupants are long gone, all that now remains are the building’s foundation stones, gallows foundation stones, its ghosts and the spirits of its former occupants still remain. As you enter and walk around the grounds of the former Transit Camp Kurtenhof “Salaspils Concentration Camp” all one has to do is close your eyes and open your ears and mind you will hear the screams and sufferings of the former occupants who were tortured executed for minor infractions of the camp rules forced to do force labor and hard labor it was working in camp shops, peat marshes and other hard labor. Even the children who occupied the camp were experimented on in the most inhuman ways.

Riga - The Latvian capital may be hosting the NATO parliamentary assembly in the coming days, but tourists will be flocking to the city over the weekend for something more fanciful than defence discussions: the country's annual blonde festival.
On Saturday, around 1,000 blondes will march through Riga dressed in pink - the culmination of the city's annual Go Blonde festival, which runs May 28-29.

St Peters Church - Riga Rooster - Riga Latvia
The Riga Rooster sits high above the rooftops of Riga Latvia and he ... Sees all, Knows everything, Tells little; but shares what's important.
Legend tells that the Riga Rooster which adorns the top of the oldest church spires in the city serves as a wind indicator and to guide visitors into the city. According to Christian tradition, the rooster is also a vigilant defender against evil, and with his morning song he can drive away all bad things.
