The Riga Christmas Market

traditionally opens on the First Sunday Advent

2 December 2012

of the Christian Holiday season.

The lighting of the First Christmas Tree

normally takes place on the same day about dusk 16:00 to 17:00 in Town Hall Square close to the River and next to Riga's City hall.


The Market in the Dome Square in Old City should stay open through New Years Eve day and then close for the Celebration of New Years Eve.

However, other Christmas Markets will be open around Riga's Old City Center and Old City and they should be open through the Russian Orthodox Christmas on 10 January 2013.

Riga Latvia to Light Up the Canal for Christmas - Live Riga

Municipality of Riga plans to light up the city canal; the lighting project will cost around half a million lats and is planned to be completed before Christmas 2009.

According to estimates made by the municipal agency Rigas Gaisma (Riga Light), setting up of decorative lights by canalside walk in central Riga will cost over LVL 480,000. This sum of money will go to lighting up bridges on Kr.Barona Street, by the Latvian National Opera, by the Freedom Monument, at Bastejkalns, as well as the Kr.Valdemara Street bridge and Kronvalda Park bridge, reports LETA.

Additionally, decorative lights will be put on trees in several spots around Riga Old Town.

As reported, Riga City Council plans on a number of activities and measures to prepare the capital city for Christmas time so that it could attract more tourists. One of the steps in this program is to light up parks in city center to make them more attractive to city residents and guests.

Santa Charity Fun Run Riga Latvia

The first annual Santas Fun Run & Walk taking place in Riga, Latvia, Sunday December 14th 2008 at 11.30am in the Dome Square.

Organized by the Rotary Club of Riga International, this 3km (approx) run/walk through the city is about fun and holiday cheer - all for a good cause.

Through their LVL 10 entry fee and individual sponsorship, Santa's Fun Run & Walk participants will raise money to help bring an RMHC Care Mobile to Latvia. This is a high tech mobile medical centre providing free care for children in poorly served areas of Latvia.

Every Santa that enters with a free 5 piece Santa suit that is their's to keep. Everyone wears it on the day. You can decorate it, adjust its size and personalise it in any way you wish. There is a prize for the Best Dressed Santa, and Best Dressed Team. Let your imagination run wild!

Santas need to find personal sponsors eg friends, family who are willing to sponsor them a few lats for a worthwhile charity and the fun of knowing they will run or walk through Riga dressed as Santa Claus.

All Santas who raise sponsorship of more than LVL25 will also receive a souvenir T shirt.

Santa Claus Interviewed at Riga Christmas Market

During his visit to Riga for the annual lighting of the First Christmas Tree, Santa Claus paid a visit to the Riga Christmas Market open in Historic Dome Square.

The main question was where's the snow?

Santa's reply is you got to be good boys or girls or you may not get any snow this year!
